As the year 2020 appeared on the horizon, so did the beginnings of a pandemic of unprecedented proportions in the modern world. A cutting-edge AI-based disease surveillance platform put forth its first alert about the novel coronavirus global outbreak on December 31st, 2019, days earlier than any leading public health organizations in the world did. In Thailand, AI-powered fever-detecting cameras are being used to screen travelers at the border. In China and Spain, the police are using drones for patrolling and for broadcasting audio messages to encourage people to stay home.
